Holidays in Hong Kong

The concentration of business and shopping centers, ultra-modern infrastructure for leisure and entertainment, beaches with opportunities for surfing and other water sports, temple complexes and cultural programs, parks and nightclubs — this is Hong Kong. There are legends about local shopping — you definitely won’t come back without purchases. Neither young people nor tourists who come to admire skyscrapers and natural beauty or to resolve financial issues with business partners will be bored here.

Where it is located

Hong Kong is part of China, being a separate territorial unit. The central part of the city of Hong Kong is located partly on the island of the same name and partly on the Kowloon Peninsula. The administrative district of Hong Kong includes the New Territories and an archipelago of 262 small islands in the South China Sea. On three sides, the Special Administrative Region of the PRC is washed by the sea. Despite its dense population, part of the island is mountainous and sparsely inhabited. A direct flight from Ukraine is not possible — tourists will have to fly with a layover in Dubai, Istanbul or Beijing. Flight time from Odesa is about 15 hours. There are also departures with layovers from Kyiv and other Ukrainian airports.

When it is best to go

Trip planning is individual and depends on the purpose of the visit and preferred weather conditions. An important factor is the cost of air travel and accommodation in local hotels. Favorable airfares are in December, while the highest are in June and July. The cost of hotel accommodation rises sharply in February, when New Year is celebrated in Hong Kong, as in all of China.

As for the weather conditions, the best time to visit is November and December, when it is warm and dry outside. The sea water warms up to +24–22°C. In October and September, the sea is warmer, but tropical cyclones are possible. In the summer months the weather is hot, and from May to September is the rainy season.

What to do

Hong Kong is an amazing city and entity where skyscrapers border on fishing villages on the outskirts, modernity blends organically with colonial heritage, and developed infrastructure coexists with untouched nature. Therefore, the vacation here is multifaceted and colorful — from shopping to beach time, from visiting attractions to going to numerous restaurants and entertainment centers.

We recommend visiting:
  • Beaches. Surfing fans are delighted with the big waves at Shek O, located in the south of Hong Kong Island. In this part of the island there is also the unique Stanley Beach with numerous attractions. It is protected from sharks, so vacationers do not need to worry about this. Those who love secluded holidays and the clearest water should head to Lo So Shing. The beach areas of Sai Kung will be appreciated by fans of water sports. Silvermine Bay Beach on Lantau Island also has a good reputation.
  • Nightclubs. It seems that Hong Kong never sleeps. Nightfall is a signal for tourists to go to the centers of entertainment complexes, pubs and night venues. Affordable entertainment is guaranteed in Lan Kwai Fong (Central District). Wanchai is packed with karaoke clubs and pubs. There are also shopping centers, hotels and other infrastructure facilities for recreation.
  • Aberdeen — a district with numerous floating restaurants and houses.
  • Victoria Peak — the highest point in Hong Kong. Visiting the viewing platform in the evening, a traveler will never forget the most beautiful views of the New Territories and mountain peaks. An unforgettable panorama of Hong Kong opens from here. There are many infrastructure facilities — cafes, souvenir shops. Madame Tussauds Museum displays wax figures of famous people.
  • A Symphony of Lights, which starts at 8 p.m. The five parts of the large-scale laser show last 13 minutes. Simultaneously, 20 skyscrapers are illuminated. It is an amazing spectacle that can be admired from several advantageous points in the city, including from the water by renting a boat.
  • Kowloon Park with numerous pavilions, architectural ensembles and rocks. It is open to visitors until 11 p.m.
The Ten Thousand Buddhas Monastery, which is reached by 400 steps. Each of them is unique.
  • Walk along the Avenue of Stars, visit the Botanical and Zoological Gardens with unique exhibits — representatives of local flora and fauna, and head to Ocean Park, where a water park is organized for children and adults will enjoy the shows at the dolphinarium.

Where to eat

  • Having visited the floating complex Jumbo Kingdom, a vacationer will become acquainted with absolutely all the traditions and gastronomic delights of Hong Kong. There are many food courts and cafes where you can enjoy seafood delicacies. In the city alone there are 2,640 seafood restaurants, and countless pubs, small cafes and bistros. It is simply impossible to stay hungry here.
  • Fishsteria
Invites tourists to enjoy lobsters, sea bass, oysters, pasta with seafood, seabass, lobster and shrimp. The menu includes tea, white wine, Prosecco, martini and more. The cozy atmosphere contributes to excellent relaxation after visiting the city’s attractions.
  • Hooked
The restaurant offers attractive prices and excellent service. Takeaway food is available. Among the many dishes it is worth noting oysters, tapas, cod (including blue cod), pies, fritters, salmon, etc. The establishment serves delicious craft beer, ale and other alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks.

What to combine it with

A holiday in Hong Kong does not need any alternatives. Business tourists combine business meetings with nightlife in clubs, time on the beaches, shopping and restaurant visits. Nearby are the islands of Macau and Hainan. In the summer season of 2019, charter flights without transfers to Hainan Island were organized from Kyiv. A beach holiday on this island can be successfully combined with a visit to Hong Kong.
